A Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist is accredited through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to practice Nutrition. We are Board Certified through the Academy and through New York State. Most RDN's hold advanced degrees and can accept Health Insurance. To maintain the "RDN" status, a RDN must complete Continuing Education credits which must be approved by the Academy. When receiving Nutrition recommendations, make certain that the person offering this information has "R.D.N." as credentials.
In NYS anyone can call themselves a Nutritionist....even you!
The 1st appointment is a one-on-one session that is an intake visit. During this 45-60 minute visit, I'll gather your personal information (medical history, surgeries, family history, diet/weight history, medications, vitamins, allergies, etc.) along with taking a height/weight measurement, review food journals you have kept and blood work that was requested by your MD.
Depending on your wishes, I speak with Primary Care Physicians and Specialists regularly. Keeping you healthy, many times, requires a team approach.
After this visit, I will determine how best to meet your needs. I always take an individualized approach for each patient....I develop guidelines that will treat you as a whole person. This will take into consideration all of your medical and nutritional needs.
The week after your intake session is when the real work begins. During your second session we'll discuss strategy, determine how to proceed and make a plan together.
Developing a healthy relationship with food is a lifestyle change. You don't achieve results with a single pill, by watching a documentary or by watching Dr. Oz. A "fad diet" is a called "fad" for a reason.
In New York many insurance companies do not recognize Registered Dietitian-Nutritionists, and therefore, do not accept us on their "panel of providers". Some have welcomed healthcare reform and are allowing coverage. I suggest calling your insurance company. Ask if "Medical Nutrition Therapy" or "Nutritional Counseling" is covered.
My office currently participates with some insurance companies.
